My photography is an eclectic mix of all things water related e.g. sailing, windsurfing, powerboats, as well as abstracts of waves, reflections, beaches, sunsets.
I grew up with the sea just a few hundred yards from my house, we lived on a cliff so our view every time we went out was the sea. It was a great sight to wake up to in the morning. Ever since then I have been connected to the sea, with boats, boatyards, fishing and growing up around the seaside.
Every time I go away from the sea to an inland town, its OK for a short while, but then I need to go and get a breath of that sea air into my lungs and of course I take my camera. I have been known to day odd days off work just to go to the beach, or just drop everything when I was working in London to disappear to the seaside for a break no matter how short it was.
What inspired me to do what I do, it is 2 fold Once I went digital in March 2003, there was no going back; I found the freedom of creativity without the expense of film (I still like film). It was shortly after I saw a small wave picture on the internet of a clear wave coming over the sandy beach I presume this wave was no bigger than 6-8inch high and one day I said I will photograph something similar.
In the early 2005 I went to Fuerteventura, Spain for a period of time to photograph windsurfers, but one day due to no wind I could not, sitting there on the beach I saw the small waves forming just as the picture I saw on the internet. I set up and laid down on the sand with a 70-300 just taking pictures of these waves, around 164 photo later I had a brief look on the camera back they looked good, so hurried home and checked them out. I was not wrong.
Ever since 2003 I have been around beaches and waves and my photography on this subject has grown from storm waves to a unique dolphin wave I managed to capture. I ache (photographically) for a good beach, great light and of course some waves.
I love photographing things on the water as well, like sailing, windsurfing, jet skis, powerboats, and anything else is there. Being on the water or on a beach is my second home, and most days during the summer it’s my office, which is a great place to work.
I will be experimenting with time lapse, long exposures and black and white of the beaches and wave in the coming year.
My future involved a lot of travel to find these beaches with waves, I have a few places in mind, Perth Australia, Hawaii, Mue Nee beach Vietnam, to name a few, watch out for my e-books and videos in the next 12 months.
