I have always taken a pride in my versatility with photography, but there is nothing I enjoy more than abandoned locations (urbex) and model shoots.
The very first time I photographed an abandoned place I became helplessly addicted. It was like stepping into a time warp. I could not help but think about the history of the place, who was there, and how different things were. Everything told a story, from the artifacts left behind, to the broken glass, and chipped paint on the walls. I simply just love documenting them.
Living here in the middle of the rust belt (Ohio) I have had access to some of the most popular cities in the United States for urbexing – Detroit, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Gary and so on.
Photographers even travel from all around the world to photograph these locations. I have personally been their tour guide a few times. I have met some great photographers and became good friends with some of them. There is nothing we love better than hitting the road looking for new locations.
The models, like the abandoned locations, are all very unique in their own way and that makes it a lot of fun. I love the creative process in putting a shoot together, from the main theme down to the smallest little details. It just feels great when people work together to get the result they wanted.
So naturally, I started to combine my two passions, photographing models in abandoned buildings. Sometimes these locations are like a mall of studios, offering so many props, backgrounds, and light. I can maximize the darker areas for something scary or do something with the color from the graffiti. Sometimes just the contrast of a beautiful model and that dirty grit of the building just works on its own.
