Photography has been a passion of mine for such a long time. When I developed my first roll of black and white film and printed my photographs in the darkroom back in high school, I knew that photography would be something I would continue pursuing for the rest of my life and would one day make a career out of.
Having come from a family of avid photographers it was almost like it was meant to be. My grandmother was a lover of nature photography; my great-uncle was a Los Angeles Times photographer for 25 years and my mother dabbled in advertising and editorial photography for various trade publications.
In college I decided to continue my pursuit and majored in photojournalism. There was something about the rawness and realism of photojournalism that I was drawn to. Every snap I took was a momentary slice of life captured. Every person I met during the process had a story that was just waiting to be told and brought to life through image. Being able to communicate a story though a series of images was so powerful.
Traditional film photography is where my photographic roots are grounded but to keep up with the times I transitioned into the digital realm and with that transition decided to dabble into different styles of photography. After college, I decided to take a stab in the more editorial/commercial realm interning for a notable stock photography agency (at the time) and doing test shoot after test shoot to gain as much experience as possible! I took the visual story-telling abilities I garnered in my documentary experiences and applied them to the new styles I wanted to become versed in. While pursuing this new direction I still always came back to my love of documentary, shooting everything from rallies in DTLA for fun to environmental portraits when out and about.
With the new direction I was moving in, I began to discover I was creating my own signature look and style. I love images that pop and have vibrant saturated colors and I really try to bring that out in every image.
I have always loved shooting outdoors and using the city as my backdrop. Living in Los Angeles, there are so many unique hidden gems from old railroad tracks to textured warehouse walls to cool bridges that just give a photo that urban, gritty feel.
I love the interaction and the relationship that is created with the subject during the shoot process. Working one on one with a client before a shoot to come up with a cool unique concept/idea and really letting them get involved in the process is what makes for a successful and exciting session.
Photography is a constant learning process for me and everyday I pick up my camera I learn something new!
There are so many great photographers the world has given us and I one day aspire to be one of those notable names! I hope to turn my part-time photography career into a full-time life long dream.
