I love to photograph life as it happens. I rarely work in studio but instead out in the field and prefer the use of natural light. My best work is done in a fast paced, unpredictable setting. I’m a bit of a photojournalist but prefer to photograph the positives in life, such as nature and religion, rather than war and devastation. With a fine art background, I always aspire to show something new and to challenge myself creatively with every assignment. Inspiration comes from all types of art and artists, but to name a few photographers I admire – Sebastião Salgado, Sally Mann, Melissa Farlow & Randy Olson and the photographers at The Photo Society.
My freelance photography business is still young and I am learning a lot along the way. I photograph weddings, events, editorial, lifestyle, nature, different cultures and pretty much anything that intrigues me. I license my photos for commercial and editorial use through Getty Images and am always looking to publish my work. Recently I was published in Islands magazine, Nature’s Best Photography magazine, Chatelaine magazine and the front cover of Unique Honeymoons magazine. I have recently moved to New York City where I can further my photography career. I look forward to many changes in my life and the unexpected gems along the way.
Mickey Smith says it best: “I see life in angles, in lines of perspective. A slight turn of the head, the blink of an eye, subtle glimpses of magic other folk might pass by. Cameras help me translate, interpret and understand what I see. It’s a simple act that keeps me grinning. I never set out to become anything in particular, only to live creatively and push the scope of my experience for adventure, for passion… If there’s no future in it, this is a present worth remembering… To do something worth remembering with a photograph or a scar, I feel genuinely lucky to hand on heart say I love doing what I do…” – Dark Side of the Lens
