I’m a Portuguese aspiring photographer living in the beautiful Islands of Azores. These islands are full of amazing scenarios that truly demonstrates nature at its most graceful splendor. These tiny spots in the middle of the Atlantic ocean is the ultimate inexhaustible source of inspiration a photographer may ask for and I am blessed to live here and be part of it.
I started shooting back in 2005 when I was doing my degree in software engineer in Porto city. Porto has a dark touchy ambiance that makes it very special. These dark environments, but full of life and stories to tell, led me to look more into the art of black and white photography and I fell in love with it. With this came the admiration for Ansel Adams who became my main influence. His photos had a meaning and a profoundly connection between him and the photograph. This is what I want to do with my work, I want to make this connection and present it to everyone.
Colors are nice – and I like to do this kind of photography too – but sometimes they get in the way and distorts the message I want to give. What I’m trying to do through photography is to show the soul of the image. With this type of photos you get to a point where sharpness and other technical details doesn’t matter anymore. Your photo is at another level of commitment, you care about feelings. You can produce bigger and sharper photos with the latest gear and software, but these aren’t what drives the human heart. Gear doesn’t do miracles, we do.
I’m in continuous change about my workflow process. Scouting places and searching for the perfect light is the first thing I do. Then, I try, and try another day, and another until I get what I want. At the “dark room”, recently I started using Adobe Lightroom and I’m enjoying it very much. I try to do little tweaks to what’s coming out of my camera. Sometimes, what comes out of the camera isn’t what you had imagined for that scenario and this is when Adobe Lightroom starts to do some magic. I like to produce some strong black and white photographs. Even Ansel Adams did this kind of work in his dark room.
Having the ability to photograph the soul of a moment in time, is something I believe it’s a life’s journey and this is what I want to do. This is my aspiration and I work hard every day to accomplished that.
