I have been working in the media for 20 years. I’ve been influenced by cinema mostly. I studied design for film & TV as well as architecture and special effects. So to say my influences lie in cinema is a bit simplistic. I have had a varied career as an Art Director in Film, working on home-grown Irish movies as well as some big American pictures over the years. My design ability definitely comes across in my work. I have a fastidiousness about my approach. I certainly like to work at getting the right shot. Having said that, I marvel at the wonder of the accidental shot. When it happens it’s like a miracle! I also trained a s a modelmaker and I have always had a fascination with the tiny. I love shooting with my Macro lens, and I love collecting small objects to shoot with. I have a hanging frame with a couple of hundred small items from over the years which I love to take out and shoot when I’m looking for some inspiration.
My preferred method of photography is observational. That’s not to say I don’t like to interact with my subject – I’m an excellent communicator. But when I’m left to instinct I have a natural feel for a good image. This is where I excel. Event photography and wedding photography encompass the best of what I do. Capturing the moment as it happens, while creating a beautiful unexpected image. I can adapt to any situation instantly, which is a necessity in this industry. People are fickle and if you as their photographer cannot adapt to their personality traits, you’ve failed as a photographer already. Even before you’ve taken a shot.
I love photography, it is a part of me, and always will be.
