I have been looking at some of the stunning work posted in the Seven by Five Flickr group and have started to wonder “What drives up to lift the camera and take photos?”
Where does the desire to capture an image comes from and what keeps us going, feeding our blogs, flickr and twitter with our work.
For very few it is for financial gain, for some it might be an escape from the day job but for me it has to be the consumption of learning.
I love learning, I love knowing nothing and embarking on the process of gaining new skills, learning new techniques and seeing improvement.

So I thought I would turn if over to you, why do you take photos? don’t comment what comes in to your head first, have a think, be honest and get commenting……..

I just love taking photos, and seeing ‘art’ that I have produced. There is some financial reward from the photography business, but not a lot

Where do you start…
Some of it is vanity (I love it when people comment on your photos)
Some of it is about capturing an unexpected moment.
Some of it is pure and simple about memories, taking you back to different time and places.
I also love the technical component, achieving what you set out to achieve.

I’ve seen a comment one day on a photo forum that says: “if you don’t know how to draw, take photos” and that’s my case ! 😀

Because it’s juste like for picking mushrooms ! Playing with the moment and the place, and creating images just by having your very own look, in a place, at a moment.
but it depends on the style of pictures you take.

I enjoy the end result. The photograph is a view into the photographers perspective. In a sense it’s performance art.

For satisfaction and to keep my eye in, I think.
Last year, shortly after returning to the world of the dSLR, I was looking through pixelpipe and saw blipfoto listed as a destination; having a few facebook friends posting through that on&off, I figured it was worth going for it. The rule there is one photo per day, no more – and obviously it’s a matter of pig-headed pride that you do no fewer than one either. The result is I get out and find or make something interesting, choosing the best of a handful of shots, every day; and I now have a sizeable body of work all on a theme to show for it, too. That can’t be a bad thing. 🙂

I love photography because it’s a great creative outlet for me. Plus I come from a painting/drawing background so I enjoy finding interesting compositions and subjects…it’s a challenge to me to continue to do that with my camera.

I’ve often asked myself the very same question. Sure I do it for the love & the money makes living easier but “why” in it’s purest form is a more profound question. Even if I wasn’t paid for doing it I’d still be taking photographs so I guess it’s just something that drives me, a need within myself.
I found a rather obvious but none the less amusing answer to the very same question by Garry Winogrand “I photograph to find out what something will look like photographed.”
That’s a pretty pure answer to say the least and one I’ve used a couple of times when interrupted while in the “creative zone”

I like the idea of capturing someone’s essence. Something they themselves might have not have known existed. And in an instant making them – hopefully – smile. Without the creativity of photography I would be far less happy than I am now.

I take photos so that I can share my perspective of the world with everyone else. Most of the photos I take I am sharing the world through my eyes. Even the photo’s that I have doctored up is me sharing the world through my perspective. My perspective can change not only day to day, but from shot to shot as well.

I take pictures every day to improve my skills as a photographer – “you can never practice too much”

I love taking pictures because I can show everyone that what I see can be so different than what they see!

I take pictures as a way of keeping a journal so that I know where life has taken me. I want to capture all of the little details – a smile, a great meal, a building, and simply a moment that I don’t ever want to forget.
