I have always been of a creative mindset, Photography is just another way for me to communicate the images and ideas I see everyday. It is an insight as to how I view the world.
My first serious attempt at photography was in college using an SLR, black and white film and a darkroom. It was these initial experiments and trials that led me further down this path. Not long after I made the move to a digital SLR but I always have a great appreciation for analogue.
My work is about a quest for beauty in what is often overlooked and mundane. I present the viewer with a visual atmosphere and it is up to you how you interpret my work, I’m naturally drawn to images with a darker subject matter, be it an unconventional fashion editorial or a portrait that really expresses a certain element of ones character, even if it is an idealized and crafted personal image.
Sometimes my work can be viewed as having an underlying malice, but I leave that to the viewer to decide. Sometimes, it is necessary to make people feel uncomfortable in order to truly express your idea. The world is not always pink and fluffy.
I have been influenced by a wide range of photographers, from the compositions and tones of Ansel Adams, to the portraits of David Bailey, which instantly strike a connection with the viewer. On a daily basis I find inspiration in the quietly forgotten objects and places most people don’t even register.
I don’t approach my photography from a technical angle of f-stops and ISO settings, I prefer to take a creative approach and experiment, let each frame inform the next, often an unintentional mistake provides a new approach to investigate.
The best images are created by fully utilizing the connection between you and your subject, whether it is a landscape or a portrait, both the subject and the photographer have something to offer.
Photography is a huge field with many masters; I continue to learn from them with each frame I shoot. My aspirations are to continue communicating my view on the world. In the future I want to experiment with more portrait and ideally fashion photography, I think the fashion industry can be a great source of inspiration with stunning photographers such as Steven Klein who continue to give the world passionate and stimulating images.
Stylistically my images are very often black and white or muted colors. In the future I plan to present a more colorful body of work as this is also of interest to me. However I don’t want to loose the often surrealist and fantasy influence.
Photography is an interpretation of the world around us, the photographer can lead the viewer and my images are an interpretation of how I see, be it fact or fiction. I aim to show the world an alternate view, unveiling beauty in what is often overlooked or considered unsightly.

I really love the photo on top.
…..but, what I love most is what you said in your profile. Photography definitely consists of the technical aspect of things, but it’s an art. It’s about being creative with a tool, and in this case your DSLR, and for you it’s all about the subject.
I am the same way, I love my camera, and the understanding the technical aspect of it all helps me be creative and original in my own way. At the moment, I am in love with portraits and capturing those once in a life time expressions and moments. I just have to overcome certain obstacles such as being timid and actual finding people to take photos of.
Thanks for sharing this with us Marten.

So many people get wrapped up in the technical aspects of the camera and totally miss the shot that was right in front of them. Sometimes you just have to point and click and see what comes of it later.
Your right the little mistakes (or big ones) are sometimes the best shots you’ll take. Great job on the profile.
