My name is Charles Saulters II, I am a young professional photographer and visual media artist based in the Massachusetts area. I shoot a wide range of subjects, but my favorite subject is people. I greatly enjoy capturing people in unique locations and pulling authentic emotions out of them.
I’ve really only been shooting professionally for about 2 years now but I work hard everyday to learn, experiment and improve so that when you see my images the hope is that you see something special, powerful and interesting rather than thinking, “I wonder how long this person has been shooting” or “This is pretty good for someone just starting out”.
Whenever I work with people I’m very conscious about not trying to make shots look overly posed. I often try to just put people in a certain scenario and watch how their bodies natural fall then gently ease them through a natural series of motions. Everything feels more organic that way and it’s easier for both my subjects and I to feel at ease.
As far as my inspirations, I would have to say I’m generally always checking out new things from popular culture, photography blogs, photo sharing sites, and things photographer friends put up. It’s always great to see what professional photographers at the top of their game are doing to see how far you can take an idea but often I find young new photographers tend to see things in different ways so I’m always referencing the two against each other and then trying to push for something new that is a synthesis of both.
I think photographers like Jeremy Cowart, Zack Arias and Chase Jarvis are all great in different ways. I feel a sense of connection with them because they are all pretty young but have been able to carve out their own niche in photography world due to lots creativity, drive and innovative ways of working.
As time goes on I’m hoping to really grow into my own niche in a way that is totally organic. I want to just do what I love most and through lots of exploration discover what really excites me most. I feel that personal exploration like this will lead to something that will set me apart from anyone else because it will be a unique expression of what make me who I am.
The final thing I’d like to mention is that, one of the things I enjoy most, and the thing I’d love to see more of is collaboration between artists. Too often people believe that other photographers/artists are the “competition” but they are not. There are so few artists and so much demand for art that the only thing really holding us back is ourselves.
The sooner we all realize that and start working together, the better off we will all be. If I could one day be considered a person who brought people of different backgrounds together it would be the best legacy I could leave.”
