I used to be a travel photographer, that was so long ago that I was using Film. Digital would have been so handy compared to lugging around film. Then my Camera was stolen so I stopped. Fast forward to 2007 and I picked up a digital version of my Film Camera and started all over again. Except this time I had a whole new area to learn and that was the processing side of life. As I move into new Genres of Photography this learning continues. I’ve tried HDR but, maybe I really suck at it so I’ve put that away for now. Currently I’m living on Australia’s Gold Coast and this provides the back-drop to my Photography.
Photography has always been my escape to a land of Solitude. That sense of calm you find whilst out doing something you enjoy. Getting up at some ungodly hour just to beat the Sun. Walking through the Rainforest with your heavy pack just to shoot a Waterfall.
Standing before a Storm Front chasing that Lightning shot you crave. Maybe it’s an addiction? It can also be the cause of so much frustration when you find yourself suffering from Photographer’s Block and the Camera sits idle for Months.
Photography and me will forever be a learning path as I try new styles/genres and learn new techniques along the way. Part of this learning I’ve undertaken is now to give back to the Community. I’m pretty active at RedBubble.com where I host a couple of Photography groups and organise meet-ups between members.
It’s always good to go out and shoot with random people you only know from online and see how others approach similar subjects. I’ve helped people with settings, had some improve on their Night Images. I’ve also been told I should probably be charging people for this. Maybe one day I might. For now I do it because I can and I enjoy helping people get more out of their Photography.
I’ve only recently started out doing Portraiture and can count the amount of Models I’ve shot on one hand(5). So I loose the solitude, I have to deal with People but I’m really enjoying controlling the Light. I spent about 12 months reading David Hobby’s Strobist blog before getting my first Flash. I still find myself going back over and over Lighting 101 and 102 today.
Portraiture – It’s a challenge for me, something new to learn and something I’d like to incorporate into my Beach Images. I have the ideas in my head and a list of People contacting wanting to work with me. Maybe when I upgrade my 400D I might feel a little more comfortable charging for my services.
