I can remember taking photographs starting when I was in middle school. I loved to photograph the football team that my father coached, trying to show the action while it was taking place. I would take pictures around the neighborhood, striving to capture what I thought needed to be shown on film. After using my father’s Pentax Honeywell into my first years of high school, I upgraded to a Canon Rebel, and began taking my first photography classes. I took classes in both digital and darkroom photography, learning everything that I could and taking on the challenges that both sides of photography can bring.
I enjoyed taking photographs of everything and anything. Simple architecture, strange objects and portraiture stood out to me the most, and these are the subjects that I tend to photograph today. After taking several photography classes in high school I was accepted into the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Arts the summer before my senior year. I was amazed at how much the 5 week program taught me, and this was the point at which I decided that photography was what I wanted to pursue as a career. I used those 5 weeks to learn as much as I could about digital and darkroom photography, but I was also exposed to other art forms and artists, which has been a major influence in my work. I took classes in drawing and writing, both of which are things that I still use in my work today.
Now, at the age of 21, I am a Junior at Tyler School of Art, working towards my BFA in Photography. Last semester I was able to study abroad in Rome, Italy, where I built up a large portfolio of black and white photographic work. Film photography is something that I am still fascinated by, and I was lucky enough to be able to work in film the whole time that I studied in Europe. Using my favorite cameras, my Canon Rebel and my Diana Mini, I was able to capture landscapes, objects and portraits during my 3 month stay in Rome and travels throughout Italy and Europe. I was also able to research and learn more about one of my favorite photographers and a major influence to my work: Francesca Woodman. This experience showed me how important travel can be to artists, and I plan to do more and more traveling as I continue to build my portfolio.
I am excited to continue to pursue my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, and can’t wait to see what the future holds for me and my photography career. I am currently passionate about analog photography, and cannot wait to study and use different darkroom processes to make my work more unique. I hope that I can keep the spirit of film photography alive, and want to bring the tradition of photography to my viewers. I love photography with all of my being, and I cannot wait to see where this passion will take me.
