I am a native Austin, TX photographer, writer and artist. I can’t begin tell you what my first camera was. I have been taking photographs since the day I could remember so it was probably a polaroid or some cheap 110 (remember those?) but I can tell you that photography has always been an emotional outlet for me. It not only helps me to get into touch with who I am but it teaches me to see inside the heart and soul of everyone and everything I shoot. Each day through the lens I learn something new about my subject (s) or myself making photography one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. It isn’t so much about being popular or famous for me as it is creating art and sharing that art with the rest of the world because I intend to photograph every inch of it! I am fascinated by nature, intrigued by unique faces, inspired by emotion and in love with macro and B&W photography.
Photography wasn’t always my career of choice however. As a child I had always dreamed of being on stage and in film so I began acting at the age of 15 but gave it up to become a fashion designer in Los Angeles, where I attended the Fashion institute of design. It was in fashion school that I realized exactly how much I mentally got out of taking photos. At the end of a long stressful day it was my cheap 17 dollar Vivitar film camera that I found solace and relaxation in as I bussed and walked all of the LA taking photo after photo. It was trial and error at first, but eventually my photography and paintings made it to a few small galleries in Santa Monica and Culver City. Eventually a divorce led to my putting my film and art career on hold. I sold everything I owned and moved back to Texas. I took photographs for years simply as a hobby. Then I married, had children and found myself taking them to create memories of my children’s’ lives. It was through my children that I found my love of photography.
My goals and aspirations as a photographer mostly leans the way of entertainment, in particular music photography. There is something wonderful about the idea spending my life photographing music artists playing a gig, shooting the cover of an album or just staging a rocking band/artist shot. For now I am happy photographing anything that inspires me in the moment but, in time, I have no doubt that my greatest aspiration to be primarily a music photographer will shine and become a full-fledged reality. I live my life by the saying “don’t try…DO” and I am very much intent on “doing”. How long do you think it will take me to get my favorite band Counting Crows to let me photo crash a concert? Hey, we all need goals right?
