I’m not technically a Photographer, in the sense that I work as a Graphic Designer, but Photography is more than a hobby for me. It’s a part of my job and my leisure time, I work at a publishers sourcing photographs, using them in layouts, deciding the best crops, designing books that are about photography.
My boss is an avid photographer and has worked with the world’s rarest and biggest Polaroid camera with film measure 20×24 inches. From time to time I go to photoshoots with him, which is an amazing experience.
In my leisure time, I love exploring the world, using my camera to capture landscapes and the people around me who are part of my journey, I love building a story through the images, and depicting a trip. My most recent trip with my Girlfriend was to the top of Mount Snowdon, Wales.
Emilie willingly got up at 5am to catch the Sunrise behind Mount Snowdon, with the light bouncing off a lake in from of us. From there we began to climb the mountain, after 3.5 miles of climbing up to the peak, shooting the lakes and rocks along the way, I proposed to my Girlfriend at the top. It’s a pretty memorable location, but the way the story developed was breathtaking, and the images that I caught up the top catch a moment in my life I’ll not forget.
For me the Internet has played a huge part in my development as a photographer, using it as a critiquing tool, as a learning tool, but also an inspiration tool. I love exploring my peer’s photography, soaking up all the techniques used to help develop my own particular style.
I love the work of Robert Capa and Henri Cartier-Bresson for their photojournalism work, It’s something that I wish I had more confidence to do, but that will come in time. In terms of landscape photographers that inspire me, I love Ansel Adams because he’s one of the first, but also Peter Lik because his style is such a huge departure from Ansel Adams.
I’m hoping that in the future I can continue to develop my style, potentially move into reportage wedding photography, using a fly on the wall style to catch those moments that can’t be missed. There are a few locations I’d love to explore, Sydney (Christmas and New Years eve), Norway’s Fjords (Aurora Borealis), Ben Nevis, and Vancouver (for the Salmon and Bears). I really hope to just enjoy exploring the world with my camera and my Fiancée.
