Paul Lomax, originally from England is a photographer based in New York City since 2001 whose photography blog has become an increasingly popular site to visit for fellow photographers, artists, critics and supporters of his on-going work.
He is a passionate photographer who employs a unique hands on, personal approach to all aspects of the artistry of photography. His photographic style is simply driven by raw, gut instinct and intuition coupled with intelligent compositions.
As a photographer he enjoys tackling all types of photography with passion, precision and professionalism. He thrives on the excitement of street photography and relishes the challenge of engaging the emotions of both his subjects and viewers.
Paul also likes planning and working on collaborative projects such as “Play Me, I’m Yours!”. Since photographing this exciting project on a non-commission basis Paul was commissioned to shoot specific installations around New York City.
Additionally He was recently invited to join http://singforhope.org/ as a volunteer artist, and a book detailing the project will feature a number of Paul’s photographs and will be presented to NYC Mayor Bloomberg and singer Alicia Keys.
Mermaid Parade, Coney Island, 2010.
Paul comments “This was the first time I had photographed the annual Mermaid Parade that takes place out on Coney Island. It was a lot of fun! You really have to be a crowd person though as it is packed out all day! On the plus side the people provide perfect cover for the more intimate & risque shots! This is one of the tame shots, but also one of the most popular that was posted to the blog!”
Future aspirations include entering into new markets such as event photography, corporate portraiture and he is also planning to open a home based studio for general portraiture.
Other areas of interest also include travel/landscape and HDR photography. Paul is currently researching short-term photographic projects including social documentation of ethnic areas of New York and its boroughs.
Other projects currently in the planning stages are a collection of intimate portraits of fellow local artists and urban counter cultures and also a publication is planned of small, personal photography collections including “Beaches”, “Seasons,” and unique events to New York City. (Working titles)
Paul has a publication planned of a coffee table sized collection encompassing a larger selection of his work to date.
Workflow
Paul’s digital workflow is Adobe Lightroom, Nik Filter Suite, and Adobe Photoshop CS4, his influences include Henri Cartier-Bresson, Ian Berry, Joey Lawrence and Martin Parr to name just a few!
Paul is completely self-taught and holds no formal qualifications in photographic training. He maintains the lack of formal qualifications has never stopped the on-going development of his photographic eye!
